Tibet’s history, China’s power

Whenever there is any domestic turmoil in China, the government’s instinctive response is always to lay the blame on external anti-Chinese influences “meddling in China’s internal affairs”. Yet it is very clear that the Dalai Lama has played no direct role in instigating the current wave of riots and demonstrations across the Tibetan plateau. It is, rather, the Chinese government’s refusal to respect Tibetan aspirations with regard to the return of their leader that is is one root cause of the present unrest.

The Cry of Tibet

The recent troubles in Tibet are a replay of events that happened two decades ago. On Oct. 1, 1987, Buddhist monks were demonstrating peacefully at the Barkor — the famous market street around the central cathedral in Lhasa — when police began beating and arresting them. To ordinary Tibetans, who view monks as “treasures,” the sight was intolerable — not only in itself, but because it stimulated unpleasant memories that Tibetan Buddhists had been harboring for years.

Much of what Barack Obama said on US race relations in his already-famous speech could apply to China’s race- related disturbances in Tibet. But there is slim chance a Chinese version of Obama will rise anytime soon and say it.

Tibetologist: China’s patriotic education of clergy “successful”

Why Tibet is boiling over

It began, oddly enough, with a balloon seller.

On Feb. 21, during a fireworks festival in the town of Tongren in Qinghai province, a Tibetan child tried to buy a balloon from a Chinese vendor. They argued over the price, and the vendor reportedly slapped the child in the face. When an older man began fighting with the balloon seller, the man was allegedly beaten and detained by a Chinese policeman, who was soon surrounded by a crowd of Tibetans.

Fears and Tears

Yes, I cried once. One advantage of belonging to the Tibetan Buddhist culture is that at the intellectual level there is a lot of turmoil, a lot of anxiety and worries, but at the deeper, emotional level there is calm. Every night in my Buddhist practice I give and take. I take in Chinese suspicion. I give back trust and compassion. I take their negative feeling and give them positive feeling. I do that every day. This practice helps tremendously in keeping the emotional level stable and steady. So during the last few days, despite a lot of worries and anxiety, there is no disturbance in my sleep.
